My old Berkeley professor John Heilbron pointed out in a witty way the circularity of the Theory of Everything so popular as a goal among high-energy physicists of our time.
Unfortunately, should they succeed in finding a T[heory] O[f] E[verything], they almost certainly will not be able to convey the good news to ordinary human beings. Instead, we will be offered the super-myth: that the world is entirely comprehensible to people unable to communicate their knowledge to any body else.
I thank Paul Forman for the reference. He and John team-taught a course in which I served as student, back in the 70s of the last century.
