Building the Movement

Your Intrepid Reporter, in his guise as the liaison of the Pacific Green Party to the HealthCare for All Oregon Coalition, had the good fortune to attend its November 15th state convention in Salem today.

I received at the front door a letter, addressed to Charles Newlin. It was conveyed to me that this epistle was to be made known by me to the leadership of the Party, which I am doing here.

Charles Newlin will agree, if not with my broadcasting Party business, at least with the judgement that he is not the leader of the Pacific Green Party of Oregon and that some other vector — as they say in the epidemiology schools — of infection must be sought.

It’s a letter addressed to the Pacific Green Party, care of Mr Charles Newlin. If that makes any difference.

After an introductory of three sentences in length, the letter recounts the state of organization at present:

20 Local Action Groups in 14 counties
100 member organizations in the coalition
13,000 individual supporters

And then asks the Pacific Green Party for a voluntary donation, somewhat in the manner as the French Monarchy asked the Catholic Church for a voluntary donation every year under the so-called ancien régime.

Our Four Per Cent of the Political Scene of Oregon is asked for one hundred dollars annually.

Update 30 November 2014 It would be churlish of me to gloat at the good fortune that enables me to pay over two thousand dollars for an entry in the Voter’s Pamphlet and cavil over one hundred of the same units maintaining current membership in the organization I have been graced with representing our movement.

Comme se dire, messieurs — noblesse oblige.
