Election Eve Address by Christina Lugo

Tomorrow is election day across the country. In over 40 states voters can choose from the Green Party. I am proud to be a member of the Green Party and a candidate representing the party. People often tell me they would vote Green because they believe in everything the Green Party stands for but they are going to vote Democrat instead because they want to vote for a bad candidate rather than a terrible candidate because they believe the Democrat will win. The answer to this problem is always the same, in a democracy whoever gets the most votes wins.

The Democratic Party has a long institutional process in this country and it has been seen as the voice of the middle class, minorities and working people. I don’t believe it. The Democrats are a good well intentioned party, but they are not for the working people, they are centrists and they will sell out the poor and minorities and the environment in a heartbeat. Democrats have voted to take our nation to war, Democrats have supported the long occupations in the middle east, they have supported Israel while it was slaughtering the Palestinians.

The Democrats have no problem taking money from corporations and the wealthy. The working people in America, the middle class, the poor and minorities think that the Democrats are on their side. The truth is that the Democrats are just one side of the one percent. The policies, institutions and organizations which hold political power in the United States are solidly behind the investing, owning class of the most elite, wealthy group of Americans and these are the people the Democratic Party really serves, even if those people are liberal and support liberal social policies, they own the process and they think they own our democracy so they aren’t much better than the Republicans.

The Green Party is different, we are grassroots, we support meaningful social and political change. The only interest we are serving is the interests of the planet. We support democratic, grassroots social and economic policies that are designed to support the working people, the poor, people of color, the developing world and most of all the planet. We engage in a comprehensive social and political analysis about our positions and are engaged in critical dialogues about oppression. We are anti-racist, anti-fascist, anti-elitist. We are pro-planet, pro-environment, pro-peace and pro-people.

The Green Party is the party everyone wants to vote for but they just think they can’t. I just want to tell you today you can. Everyone who takes that step forward pushes us closer to healing the planet, towards building power for the working classes, and takes us closer to the future that our children deserve. I hope you will choose to vote Green this election season and join us in moving forward away from fear and toward hope.
