Jottings of a Jaded Convention-goer

Saturday 7 June 2014 10 am
basement room of the Ike Cafe
299 SE Cottage

state convention
Pacific Green Party

Chris Henry arrives, identifies self as Progressive Party member

10:40 am
Mike Beilstein makes presentation on Citizen Climate Lobby’s carbon-tax
endorsed by consensus 11 am
Yaney MacIver puts it to Mike B. to run statewide: he does not decline
I state willingness to serve on SCC — unnecessary
11:20 Max Harmon agrees to serve.
11:40 blah-blah-blah on food rights
[break for lunch]
1:30 my election speech won a warm round of applause (but so did that of Steven Cody Reynolds)
I am tired want to take a nap. huh. the bloviating about the lack of a viable nominee for statewide partisan office.
2:00 pm parenthetically, Joshua Smith (Oregon House district 25) says he has registered about 15 Greens in the last couple of months.
2:05 Seth Woolley arrives
2:15 Michael Sonnleitner gives a thoughtful speech defending thought-provoking education against what he characterizes as the “fascist” tendency in American education today; P.C.C. is the largest educational institution in Oregon (90,000 students enrolled)

a culture of fear moving instead to empowerment

— if anything he earned the warmest round of applause.
2:30 strangely, Seth locked in consultation w/ S.C. Reynolds, whose credentials he panned, & at length.
2:45 reconvene to take vote(s) on nominees: S.Woolley gives his interesting, if involved, explanation of voting procedures in PGP.
Ten minutes of totally wasted time follows. When we’re on the S.C. Reynolds nomination, Seth reverses himself — & cuts the ground out from under George Hutchinson. I call for a written ballot.

(upon questioning by B. Harmon) Ralph [Forrest-Ball] has M.S. in math, but earns living as locksmith
3:30 we’re finished with nominations; are talking budget priorities: it sounds more like an S.C.C. mtg than a state convention.
3:50 M. Sonnleitner & C. Lugo are alternates to GPUS convention July

[at this point the manuscript ended]
