Why the Remarks on Marx’s Mathematical Manuscripts Were Not Published 30 Years Ago

There is no need for an explanatory narrative; a series of documents will do.

Dear Professor Meo

We have received and discussed your proposal for a paper at the West Coast Marxist Scholars Conference in Berkeley in late April 1984.  We were pleased with your outline and feel it is suggestive of the kinds of papers we would like to see on the program.  Before we can make a final decision about the paper, however, we need to see a more or less completed version.  Can you get this to us by Feb 1?  Looking forward to reading it and seeing you in Berkeley.

Yours,

Albert Szymanski for the WCMSC

Dear Mr. Meo:

This letter is sent to inform those persons whose papers were accepted for presentation at the West Coast Marxist Scholars Conference that the amount of time available for presentation of each paper is thirty minutes.  Presentations should not exceed the time limit.

You will receive a Conference Program around the middle of March which will inform you of the date, time, and session in which your paper is scheduled.

We are pleased that you will be presenting a paper and look forward to seeing you at the conference.

Sincerely,

Shirley Cereseto for the WCMSC

Dear Michael:

Thanks for your letter dated 17 February 1984.  The program for the West Coast Marxist Scholars Conference has already been typeset for printing, so unfortunately, it is too late to add your affiliation with the Institute for Historical Study of San Francisco.

I am sending a copy of your letter to the Bay Area Planning Committee for their response to your inquiry concerning promotional material for the conference.

Looking forward to seeing you at the conference.

Cordially yours,

Shirley Cereseto

Dear Participant in the West Coast Marxist Scholars Conference:

Thank you for submitting your paper to the West Coast Marxist Scholars Conference.  The response to the Conference call for papers has been very enthusiastic, and you will be among approximately 100 speakers delivering papers April 26-29.

Due to the number of paper proposals we have decided to ask all speakers to limit their presentation to twenty minutes (not thirty, as you might have been informed previously) in order to assure time for discussion in each session.

Enclosed are several copies of the tentative program.  Please do whatevery you can to publicize the Conference among your colleagues and contacts (let me know if you want more copies of the program).  We also encourage you and your contacts to pre-register for the Conference since space will be limited.

If you have published works that you would like available for sale at the Conference, please inform me immediately and provide publishing information.

Looking forward to your participation,

Daniel Todes, for the Steering Committee, WCMSC

Dear Organizer of the West Coast Marxist Scholars Conference:

Since receiving the “preliminary schedule” of the conference this last week, I have had to reconsider my participation.  The Communist Party of the United States appears to be the primary organizer of this conference, and I have no respect for its methods or its goals.  They are the same political organization which established the concentration camps of the Soviet union, eliminated free elections in Eastern Europe, and consistently advocated the use of any means, no matter how repugnant, to attain their end.

In political life, of course, compromise is always desirable; nothing can be accomplished without it.  One must be willing to work together with people with whom one does not agree in order to engage is any political association.  It is the magnitude of their crimes against reasonable discourse and human dignity, not the existence of them, which makes association  with the Communists impossible.  Any hope that I retain that the present generation can learn from these enormous crimes of the past forces me to decline to participate in a conference organized and sponsored by the Communist Party.

Please withdraw my name from the list of participants.

Signed,

Michael Meo

Update 6 November 2016: I quote from a ring-wing blog, regarding the upcoming election:

And oh —did you know? —the American Communist Party is backing Mrs. Clinton’s candidacy. Mrs Clinton has of course loudly repudiated their support when challenged about it by interviewers. Oh, wait …

The link, by the way, supports the assertion, that the Communist Party US is supporting the Clinton campaign. Some readers might cavil at the source being used, but the fact is there. That which, for me, is something I — as a radical leftist — want nothing to do with — is one of the supporters of the nominee of the Democratic Party (which was not, as the support for Trump by the KKK was, of interest to the Mainstream Media). I am certainly glad I did not vote for Ms Clinton.
