United States Invades Libya

When should, do you suppose, the start of war be named?

The Obama Administration of the US government began a bombing campaign against Libya in late March of last year. I asked the State Co-ordinating Committee of the Pacific Green Party to condemn that bombing, and I quit the S.C.C. when it chose, by majority vote (3 out of 5) to override my block.

When Congress told the President that the War Powers Act required a report to Congress, he refused to comply, breaking the law but claiming that bombing Libya was not an act of war.

So when does the War in Libya begin? I could tell a story, for historical perspective.

When in July of 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was assassinated (while on a “good-will” mission) within the borders of Bosnia by terrorists who came over from the state of Serbia, the Royal Imperial government [I translate their own term for it] demanded the right to send its own investigators onto Serbian soil to arrest and or transport back to Royal Imperial courts the perpetrators and organizers of the deed. The sovreign state of Serbia refused that demand, saying it would find the culprits itself.

The conflagration of world war followed, which at least some authorities suggest was exactly what Serbia wanted.

So you see, there is already a lot of precedent, that the crime of assassination cannot be the grounds for invasion. Now, according to today’s Associated Press story

About 50 U.S. Marines were sent to Libya to guard U.S. diplomatic facilities. The Marines are members of an elite group known as a Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team, or FAST, whose role is to respond on short notice to terrorism threats and to reinforce security at embassies.

our invasion force is small. Let me point out that the force is being sent without any request for it from the Libyan government, and that the dispatch of troops to a country where an American citizen has been killed is a classic colonial move. I note the (for me) telling detail that what is being sent is the “Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team,” which is unlikely really to be designed for the humdrum job of guarding an embassy. Rather, they’re going to go out there and (presumably with the extorted approval of the puppet government we installed in Tripoli) go hunting.

So, if the war starts with the invasion rather than the bombing, the War in Libya has begun.
